GST-4-dependent suppression of neurodegeneration in C. elegans models of Parkinsons and Machado-Joseph disease by rapeseed pomace extract supplementation.

Published in Frontiers in Neuroscience, 2019

In this paper, we demonstrated that rapeseed pomace extract rescued the motor function of Machdo-Joseph disease model C.elegans and prevented dopaminergic degeneration in in two C. elegans models of Parkinsons disease.

Integrating genetic and genomic analyses of combined health data across ecotypes to improve disease resistance in indigenous African chickens.

Published in Frontiers in Genetics, 2020

In this paper, we assessed phenotypes associated with health and productivity across native chicken ecotypes, to determine whether increased sample size across ecotypes outweighed increased genetic variation to detect putative canidate genes and variants associated with traits and genomic prediction of traits.

Genetic characterisation of the Connemara pony and the Warmblood horse using a within-breed clustering approach.

Published in Genetics Selection Evolution, 2023

In this paper, we discovered that Warmblood horses are better genetically described by genetic clusters rather than studbook of origin, and demonstrated than Connemara ponies have increasing inbreeding on a level with Warmbloods.

Does inbreeding contribute to pregnancy loss in Thoroughbred horses?

Published in Equine Veterinary Journal, 2024

This paper found that inbreeding in Throughbreds was a contributor to middle-to-late term pregnancy loss, but not to early pregnancy loss.

Pharmacological inhibition of acetylcholinesterase improves the locomotion defective phenotype of a SCA3 C. elegans model.

Published in microPublication Biology, 2024

This paper found that acetylcholinesterase inhibitor rescued a locomotion defect in Machado-Joseph disease model C.elegans, indicating a potential role in the disease dvelopment.

Characterisation of phenotypic patterns in equine exertional myopathy syndrome.

Published in Equine Veterinary Journal, 2024

This paper found two distinct phenotypes within recurrent exertional rhabdomyolsyis syndrome in horses, that clustered based on patterns of clinical signs, indicating potential novel subtypes of the disease.

[Preprint] Breed-specific effects of inbreeding and artificial selection on susceptibility to equine exertional rhabdomyolysis.

Published in Authorea, 2024

This paper found that Connemara ponies had indicators of selection between RER and control ponies, whilst Warmblood horses with RER were significantly more inbred than controls.

Why equestrians use auxiliary reins on horses, their biomechanical perceptions, and barriers to human behaviour change.

Published in Journal of Equine Rehabilitation, 2025

This paper found that 60% of respodnents had or would use auxiliary reins, and these equestrians had signifcantly lower biomechanical knowledge test scores than those who no longer used them. Social influence and lack of physical riding or training skills were primary drivers for use.

Private Tuition

Tuition, Private, 2014

I offered private tuition for secondary pupils undertaking National 5 and Higher English courses, and also tuition in essay writing skills and referencing for undergraduate students in English and Philosophy.

Supervisor for student research projects

Supervising, The Royal Veterinary College, 2020

I supervised vet student elective research rotation projects, and undergraduate biological sciences student projects.

Horse husbandry practical teaching

Undergraduate veterinary medicine course, Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, University of Edinburgh, 2022

I conduct practical horse husbandry teaching on the BVM&S programme as part of the Animal Life & Food Safety course that spans first and second year on the five year programme and first year on the graduate entry programme. I teach basic horse handling, some basics of nutrition, passporting and aging by teeth. I also conduct examinations.
